Alpine riverbed alert
Heavy rain has fallen since Friday evening in the headwaters of the major Canterbury alpine rivers (Rangitata, Rakaia, Waimakariri, Hurunui, and Waiau-uha, Ahuriri). The rain eased Saturday evening and has now ceased. Flows are receeding in the upper parts of these rivers and the river peaks have or will soon peak at their respective mouths.
Beware of increased flows today if you are working or recreating in these riverbeds. Out-of-river flooding from any of these rivers is unlikely.
Rangitata River
Heavy rain fell in the Rangitata catchment during Saturday but has now ceased. Flows in the river peaked at 636 m3/s at the Klondyke gorge recorder around midnight these flows will reach the mouth soon. Flows are not expected to get high enough to cause out-of-river flooding. We will continue to monitor river flows.
