2022 Local elections

The next local body election runs from 16 September to 8 October 2022. Find out about who is standing as a candidate and how you can enrol and vote.

Every three years the community elects 14 councillors in seven constituencies for the Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury).

Elections will be held in all seven constituencies across Canterbury.

Who is standing?

Find out who is standing in the local elections. Candidate nominations closed at 12 noon on Friday 12 August.

Elections timeline

15 July 2022: Candidate nominations open

12 August 2022 at noon: Candidate nominations close

16 - 21 September 2022: Voting papers are sent out

16 September - 8 October 2022: Voting period

4 October 2022: Mailed-in votes must be in the post

8 October 2022: Voting closes noon. Ballots must be dropped off at this stage

From 13 October 2022: Declaration of results

Meet the Candidates events

Environment Canterbury does not hold "Meet the Candidates" events, we will consider publishing details of candidate meetings.

We will need to be informed by the group/organisation holding the meeting, along with the name and contact details of the meeting organiser, location, date and time details, and confirmation that the event is non-partisan and free to attend.

Location: Aorangi Netball Pavilion, Morgans Rd, Timaru
Organiser: Age Concern South Canterbury
Candidates: Timaru ward candidates along with mayoral candidates and Environment Canterbury candidates

About the elections

City, district, and regional councils in Waitaha/Canterbury play a broad range of roles taking responsibility for the social, cultural, environmental and economic well-being of their communities.

Elections are conducted every three years by postal vote. The regional council election will be first-past-the-post and candidate names will appear on voting papers in random order. Papers will be sent to you from mid-September. Voting closes at noon on Saturday 8 October 2022.

You must be on the parliamentary electoral roll to vote. You can enrol or check and update your details at vote.nz.
