Government proposes changes to RMA national direction

Central Government has announced a package of proposals that, if implemented, will mean changes to national direction under the Resource Management Act.

This includes changes to national policy statements, national environmental standards and regulations.

The proposals are now open for public consultation and cover the following areas:

  • Infrastructure and development
  • Primary sector
  • Freshwater
  • Housing (consultation open early June)

The Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury) has been proactively engaging with Central Government as it works through its proposals for resource management reform.

Kaimahi/staff at Environment Canterbury now need to analyse the full package of proposals put forward.

The aim is to understand what these would mean for our work programmes and regional government more broadly. The implications for our partners and communities also need to be considered.

Kaimahi will present their assessment and advice to Council in the coming weeks.

It is likely that Council will make a submission on the proposals.

It is important to understand that this is a package of proposals to be consulted on. It doesn't change the work we are doing now or in the immediate future.
