Plan ahead if you're travelling with Metro on Friday evening

Public Transport General Manager Stewart Gibbon said those travelling on the normal Metro buses should plan ahead for Friday evening and allow extra time.

“We expect these routes to face delays due to road closures and traffic in the city ahead and after the match. If you’re going to the game, Event Direct can provide you with a direct ride in and out of the city – allowing you to beat the queues. These delays will have an impact on almost the entire network,” he said.

The Metro network will operate to normal timetables. Routes servicing the Bus Interchange may experience high demand, particularly after the rugby.

Successful launch

Event Direct was successfully launched at Super Round over 24-26 April 2026.

  • 6.5% of eventgoers used Metro transport over the weekend.
  • 95% of Event Direcvt users were satisfied  or very satisfied with the service.

Canterbury Regional Council Public Transport Core Service Lead Councillor Joe Davies is proud of how Event Direct’s launch went.

“It was a smooth operation which gave customers a direct guaranteed ride. We received lots of positive feedback from customers about the new service which is also encouraging,” he said.
