Home heating subsidies available in South Canterbury

South Canterbury homeowners looking to replace their expired or expiring wood burners can access financial assistance, with a new provider joining Environment Canterbury's Warmer Cheaper programme.

Modserve has been appointed as the programme's new home heating subsidy provider for Timaru, Waimate and Geraldine, helping eligible households upgrade to cleaner, more efficient heating.

Environment Canterbury Acting Team Leader Southern Compliance, Steve Firth said the appointment is welcome news for homeowners facing the cost of replacing an expired or expiring wood burner.

"We know replacing a wood burner can be a significant investment, and we want to make sure eligible homeowners can access support because keeping your home warm shouldn't have to come at the expense of your household budget.

"With Modserve now on board, South Canterbury residents have a local point of contact to help them understand their options, check their eligibility and access funding."

Replacing older wood burners helps improve air quality

Home heating is a significant source of winter air pollution in many Canterbury towns. Replacing older wood burners with cleaner, more efficient heating helps reduce harmful emissions, keeping our communities warmer and our air healthier.

"Upgrading an old wood burner isn't just good for your home. It's also an opportunity to improve the air we all breathe," Steve said.

"By helping households make the switch to cleaner heating, we're supporting warmer, healthier homes and better air quality for our communities."

Modserve will manage applications and assessments for the programme, helping eligible homeowners navigate the process and access subsidies.

Homeowners in the Timaru, Waimate and Geraldine Clean Air Zones with an expired or expiring wood burner are encouraged to check whether they qualify.
