Introducing the 2026 Environment Canterbury Youth Rōpū

We recently welcomed our 2026 Environment Canterbury Youth Rōpū, a passionate group of rangatahi aged 14–24 who advocate for the environment and represent young people across Waitaha Canterbury.

The Youth Rōpū provides advice and perspectives on key regional issues including public transport, environmental protection, climate resilience, and local government decision-making.

Council Deputy Chair Iaean Cranwell and members of our Youth Engagement and Education team welcomed the Rōpū, their whanau and friends with a mihi whakatau.

Following the welcome, members took part in whakawhanaungatanga (got to know each other) and had an induction covering:

Deputy Chair Cranwell says he is looking forward to working alongside the group this year.

“I’m excited to see the kete of skills and knowledge they bring to the role. The passion of the rangatahi on the Rōpū is incredibly inspiring and the people of Waitaha will benefit from their perspective in areas such as public transport, local politics and environmental advocacy .”

There are 16 members in the 2026 Youth Rōpū, including returning representatives and new members bringing fresh ideas and lived experience from across the region.
