Refuel right: prevent fuel spills and protect Canterbury’s waterways this summer
A few drops of fuel might not seem like much, but they can harm fish, birds, and the waterways we all love. Refuelling boats carefully helps prevent spills that can pollute Canterbury’s rivers, lakes, and coastal waters.
As more people head out for fishing trips, water sports, and long summer days on the water, it’s a good time to remember that refuelling carefully is one of the simplest ways boaties can help protect these special places.
Why safe boat refuelling matters for waterways
“Even a small spill of petrol or diesel can have a big impact. It pollutes the water, harms fish and birds, and can spoil the places we all enjoy,” says Emma Parr, Coastal Response and Readiness Lead.
Environment Canterbury Regional Delivery Committee Chair, Councillor John Sunckell says most spills are completely preventable. A few small habits can make all the difference.
"Good environmental stewardship starts with simple, everyday actions. Refuelling responsibly ensures we’re all doing our part to safeguard the waterways our communities value so highly," Councillor Sunckell says.
Refuel right with these simple steps
- Take your time. Slowing down reduces the risk of spills.
- Don’t overfill. Fuel expands in the heat, so leave a little space in the tank.
- Be prepared. Keep a rag or absorbent pad handy to catch any drips.
- Use the right gear. A funnel or fuel collar helps make the job easier and cleaner.
