Join the Environment Canterbury Youth Rōpū 2026

If you're aged 14-24 and passionate about the future of our environment, communities and region, now's your chance to have your voice heard. Applications are open for the Environment Canterbury Youth Rōpū (EYR), a group of young people from across Waitaha Canterbury who bring youth perspectives to environmental and community issues affecting our region.

EYR provides a platform for rangatahi to connect, learn, lead and advocate on issues that matter to them. Members work alongside Environment Canterbury councillors and kaimahi, contribute to regional conversations, and help ensure young people's voices are part of decision-making.

What does the Youth Rōpū do?

EYR is made up of young people who are passionate about creating positive change.

Members have opportunities to:

  • Share youth perspectives on regional issues and projects
  • Connect with councillors, decision-makers and community leaders
  • Advocate for issues important to young people
  • Support environmental initiatives and community events
  • Build leadership, communication and governance skills
  • Develop networks with other passionate rangatahi from across Canterbury
  • Whether your interests are climate action, biodiversity, public transport, education, freshwater, community wellbeing, or something else entirely, the EYR is a place to learn, contribute and make an impact.

Why join?

Being part of the EYR is more than attending meetings.

Members gain access to:

  • Professional and personal development opportunities
  • Leadership training, workshops and conferences
  • Connections with other young leaders across the region
  • Opportunities to help shape projects and events
  • Noho marae and learning experiences that deepen understanding of te ao Māori
  • Plenty of great kai and kōrero along the way
  • It's also a great way to build confidence, explore future study and career pathways, and make lifelong connections with people who care about Canterbury's future.

Who can apply?

We're looking for young people aged 14-24 who:

  • Live in Waitaha Canterbury
  • Care about their communities and the environment
  • Enjoy sharing ideas and hearing different perspectives
  • Want to make a positive difference in the region

No previous experience is necessary. We welcome applications from people with a wide range of backgrounds, interests and experiences.

How does it work?

The EYR meets fortnightly, with a mix of online and in-person meetings. In-person meetings are generally held at Environment Canterbury's Tuam Street office in Christchurch.

There are representative positions available from across Canterbury, alongside opportunities for additional general members to be involved.
