Flood Warning : Canterbury Alpine Rivers and Ashburton River Catchment

Alpine Rivers

Heavy rain and snow has been falling in the headwaters of the major Canterbury alpine rivers (Rangitata, Rakaia, Waimakariri, Hurunui, and Waiau-uha). We have moderately high flows in these rivers currently.

Other rivers with catchments that extend into the foothills (Ashley, Selwyn, Orari, Opihi) are all flowing slightly high and will be high through Friday.

Rainfall is easing in the upper catchments. River flows are expected to remain high through Friday. 

Beware of increasing flows if you are working or recreating in these riverbeds. Out-of-river flooding from any of these rivers is considered unlikely. 

Ashburton River

Steady rain has been falling in the headwaters of the Ashburton River catchment overnight (Thursday/Friday).  Rain is easing, and river flows are decreasing. 

Rangitata River

Steady rain has been falling in the headwaters of the Rangitata River catchment overnight (Thursday/Friday). Rain is easing and the river flow is decreasing.  

We will continue to monitor forecasts, landed rainfall, river flows and our flood protection infrastructure throughout the event, 

We recommend that you stay up to date with the latest flooding information and be aware of increasing flows if you are working or recreating in the riverbed.  Farmers adjacent to flood affected rivers should consider moving stock away from vulnerable areas.
