Council agrees to committee youth representatives and approves key plan change
Council heard from the community about a range of topics at their meeting on Wednesday 26 February as part of public forums, deputations and petitions. Read on to find out about other decisions made around the table.
They made Plan Change 7 operative and the Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan fully operative, and decided to appointment of up to two youth members to the Strategy and Policy Committee, with no voting rights but full ability to participate in meetings and workshops.
Hearing from our community
- Public forum: Janice Mehrtens from the Waimate Community Vehicle Trust spoke to Council regarding the possibility of immediate relief for the Trust, with a request to increase future annual grants.
- Deputation: Taylah Bentley-Eddington and Joseph Fullerton from our Youth Rōpū spoke in support of Option A as part of the youth representation paper presented later in the meeting.
- Petition: Pam Williams tabled a petition from residents in regard to bringing a bus service back to Aranui.
- John Russell-Hodge from Why Waste Waimate Inc tabled a petition concerning the South Island Resource Recovery Ltd (SIRRL) proposal to build a waste incinerator in Waimate, requesting that we do not give consent to the proposal.
Notices of motion from Councillors
A notice of motion was received by Councillor Davies, where he asked staff to report back to the Strategy and Policy Committee meeting on 2 April, on the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence Working Group.
A notice of motion was received by Councillor Peter Scott, where he asked for staff advice on what could stop Council from entering into a subsidiary loan with Central Government.
Youth to be appointed to the Strategy and Policy Committee
Council were presented with options for youth representation on the Strategy and Policy Committee.
After discussion, Council approved the appointment of up to two youth members, with no voting rights but full ability to participate in meetings and workshops.
Receipt of wilding conifer international visitor levy funding boost
A supplementary paper that went to Council today sought the Council’s approval for delegated authority to receive and administer approximately $2.45M of funding from Central Government, for the National Wilding Conifer Control Programme (NWCCP).
This funding will support expenditure over and above what was included in Year 1 of the Long-Term Plan 2024-34.
Additionally, Plan Change 7 and the Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan were also made fully operative. Read more on that here.
