Have your say on the Rolleston bus commute – what's working best for you?

Selwyn-based commuters are encouraged to have their say on local bus services.

In September, a new collaboration between Metro and Bentley Coachlines saw more direct bus services launched for Selwyn-based commuters.

Two new routes were created, 84 Rolleston Direct West and 85 Rolleston Direct East, resulting in 21 additional direct daily services. These combined services have been running as a six-month trial.

More options to better meet demand

Canterbury Regional Council Public Transport Core Service Lead Councillor Joe Davies was pleased with how the new services have been running, providing more options for Selwyn commuters.

“It follows strong demand for extra capacity, so it’s great to see how this trial has responded to that.

“Patronage has been tracking well, with 31,000 passenger trips recorded on Route 84 and Route 85 over the past four months. This is 30 per cent more passenger trips than what was recorded over the same time last year,” Cr Davies said.

New combined service hits five month milestone

Bentley Coachlines initially approached us asking for approval to run its privately operated commuter services from Rolleston to the city in June. Our staff worked with the operator to provide commuters with a legible combined service.

As a private operator, Bentley Coachlines is not subsidised and does not rely on ratepayer funding. It’s not part of the Metro network, meaning that it has its own fare and payment system.

Have your say on the routes

“As we near the end of the trial period, we want to know if you’ve used the service, what improvements would make you use the service, or use it more often, and what your experiences have been,” public transport general manager Stewart Gibbon said.

“Like with any trial, its important people have their say. Your feedback and support of this trial will help determine and shape what it looks like in future,” Stewart added.

Metro and Bentley Coachlines will work together on plans for the services beyond the trial period. Any changes will be communicated to customers ahead of time.
