Canterbury Waste Joint Committee

The Canterbury Waste Joint Committee is responsible for advancing regional solid waste and hazardous waste minimisation in Canterbury.

We rejoined the Canterbury Waste Joint Committee in June 2022 in acknowledgement of the need for greater collaboration and alignment for regional waste minimisation and management. As a member of the committee, we have agreed to:

  • promote reduction as the preferred means of minimising waste
  • ensure that waste diversion is our primary aim in managing waste that is already created
  • lead by example, incorporating waste minimisation into our own operations
  • recognise that waste disposal is the last resort and must be undertaken in an environmentally responsible manner
  • ensure that our economic and regulatory policies are consistent with and promote waste minimisation goals
  • actively promote the principles of waste reduction at source, by working with and influencing industrial and commercial interests and central government policy.

Canterbury Waste Minimisation grant

The committee offers a contestable fund for new and innovative projects that progress waste minimisation within the Canterbury region.
