Public transport delivery dashboard

Every month, Metro’s route performance, patronage and financial data are collated into a delivery dashboard, which is presented to the Council.

This gives Council and the public a wider view of how our Greater Christchurch and Timaru services are tracking across different measurements. Included in the dashboard each month are reliability measurements, the number of safety incidents, patronage figures, as well as the top and bottom five Greater Christchurch routes.

To help improve the accessibility of this information, we are now publishing these, along with a small summary, on this webpage each month. You can find all dashboards since June 2025 below.

May 2026 dashboard

Key points:

  • Patronage for the year was down 0.1 per cent against the previous year for Greater Christchurch and down 6.9 per cent against last year for Timaru. Fuel costs do not seem to be influencing travel behaviour shifts in Timaru.
  • In Greater Christchurch patronage has seen an increase of 3 per cent compared to May 2025, primarily driven by the current fuel situation influencing travel behaviour. Events in Te Kaha during May will have had a small contribution to this.
  • For the first time in nearly three years Total Mobility consumption has seen a decline with the month of May down 4.3 per cent on May 2025 usage. Increased fare rates and fuel surcharges are likely influencing this. Government changes to the subsidy rate and maximum fare cap, will commence from 1 July and this is expected to also have a negative impact on consumption rates.
  • We continue to track well above our private revenue target of 13 per cent, sitting at 17.3 per cent at this stage of the year and are likely to finish the year close to this level.
  • Safety incidents have seen a sharp rise March through May, directly relating to an increase in the “Vehicle accident – No injuries” category. Work is underway to better understand this shift.
