  1. Selwyn Waihora Water Zone Committee progress report

    Each of Waitaha/Canterbury’s water zone committees has an action plan which outlines how they will work with the community to deliver their aspirations for freshwater as outlined in the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS). Committees report annually to let the CWMS partners and community know how things are tracking.

  2. Local projects and priorities

    Rejuvenating the ecosystem health of Te Waihora and its catchment is a key focus for our work in the zone. 

    We work with landowners, community, groups and other organisations to undertake a number of actions in the zone which support the protection and enhancement of biodiversity, water quality, mahinga kai and more.

  3. The Waikirikiri/Selwyn Near River Recharge project

    Recharging underground aquifers and augmenting stream flow in the Selwyn water zone.

    Supporting the lifeblood of Selwyn and Te Waihora
    The Waikirikiri/Selwyn Near River Recharge project is a multi-million dollar scheme to enhance cultural, environmental and recreational values in the region by discharging clean Rakaia River water into the groundwater system near the Waikirikiri/Selwyn River during dry periods.

  4. Governor-General welcomed to Canterbury

    Earlier this week Environment Canterbury welcomed Their Excellencies, The Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy and Sir David Gascoigne, to Selwyn District. 

    Their Excellencies were taken on a tour of key sites around Te Waihora / Lake Ellesmere, starting at Ngāti Moki Marae at Taumutu and finishing at Lincoln University’s Ashley Dene Research and Development Station.
