Notice of wallaby control: Ruataniwha Conservation Area/Ferintosh Station
WHAT: Contractors will be carrying out search and destroy for wallabies with dog and rifle teams during the day. Some night shooting operations may take place if required.
WHERE: Ferintosh Station and the adjacent area in the Ruataniwha CA – North of the Big Rock Easement Track to Boundary Stream.
WHEN: Wednesday 19th – Friday 21st August.
Please avoid the area if possible.
Notice of wallaby control: Turton’s Saddle, Hakatere Conservation Area
WHAT: Contractors will be carrying out search with a dog/rifle team following up on a wallaby sighting report in the area
WHERE: Turton’s Saddle/Turton’s Stream area in the Hakatere Conservation area off the Rakaia Valley.
WHEN: Monday 17 to approx. Friday 21 August (Weekdays only, during daylight hours. Please avoid the area during this period.)
Notice of wallaby control: Moorhouse Range/Tenehaun Conservation Area wallaby sighting follow-up
WHAT: Contractors will be carrying out search with a dog/rifle team following up on a wallaby sighting report in the area
WHERE: Moorhouse Range/Tenehaun Conservation Area, between the South Branch Ashburton River and the Rangitata River
WHEN: Monday 17 to approx. Friday 28 August (Weekdays only, during daylight hours. Please avoid the area during this period)
Right to demand a poll on electoral system
Notice is given under section 28 of the Local Electoral Act 2001 that the Canterbury Regional Council resolved on 16 August 2023 to retain the First Past the Post (FPP) electoral system for the 2025 and 2028 triennial elections of the Council.
Electors of the Canterbury Regional Council have the right to demand a poll on the electoral system to be used at the 2028 triennial election of the Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury), in the event that an election is held.
The choice is between the First Past the Post (FPP) and the Single Transferable Vote (STV) electoral systems. Unless a poll determines otherwise, the FPP electoral system will continue to be used for the Canterbury Regional Council elections.
In accordance with sections 29 and 30 of the Local Electoral Act 2001, a valid demand for a poll must be:
- made in writing
- signed by at least 5 percent of electors enrolled as eligible to vote at the previous triennial election of the Canterbury Regional Council. This will require a minimum of 23,177 signatures
- delivered to the office of the Canterbury Regional Council, 200 Tuam Street, Christchurch by 5pm Monday, 11 December 2026 (for a poll to be held by 14 March 2027).
Every elector who signs a demand must also set out in it his or her full name and the address for which he or she is qualified as an elector of the Canterbury Regional Council.
If a valid demand for a poll is received after 11 December 2026 a poll will be held after 14 March 2027 with the outcome to apply for the 2031 and 2034 triennial elections (if held).

Public notice: Amendments to the Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan (CLWRP)
Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury) gives notice that, in accordance with s55(2) of the Resource Management Act 1991, the following regional plans have been amended to incorporate changes to the Resource Management (National Environmental Standards for Commercial Forestry) Regulations 2023 (NES-CF 2023):
- Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan (CLWRP)
The changes relate to removing requirements that are more stringent than the changes to the NES-CF 2023 allows for. A copy of the full public notice can be viewed at ecan.govt.nz/public-notices

Public notice: Proposed Plan Changes 8, 2 and 1
Public notice of Plan Change 8 to the Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan, Plan Change 2 to the Hurunui and Waiau River Regional Plan, and Plan Change 1 to the Waipara Catchment Environmental Flow and Water Allocation Regional Plan, and use of the freshwater planning process
In accordance with Section 80A and clause 5 of Schedule 1, Resource Management Act 1991Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury) has prepared the following freshwaterplanning instruments:
- Proposed Plan Change 8 to the Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan
- Proposed Plan Change 2 to the Hurunui and Waiau River Regional Plan
- Proposed Plan Change 1 to the Waipara Catchment Environmental Flowand Water Allocation Regional Plan
Environment Canterbury has decided to use the freshwater planning process set out in Part 4 ofSchedule 1 to the Resource Management Act 1991, because each of these Plan Changes relateto freshwater.

Notice of wallaby control: Simons Hills Station and Simons hills Conservation Area
WHAT: Contractors will be carrying out search for and controlling wallabies with a dog and rifle team on Simons Hill including the Simons Hill Conservation Area
WHERE: Simons Hill, adjacent to the Tekapo River.
WHEN: Monday 10th – Friday 14th August 2026
Public are advised to keep to formed tracks during this period or preferably avoid the area.
Notice of wallaby control: Ruataniwha Conservation Area & Ferintosh Station
WHAT: Contractors will be carrying out wallaby control with dog and rifle teams during the day and may carry out thermal night shooting, if needed.
WHERE: Ferintosh Station and the adjacent area in the Ruataniwha CA – From the Big Rock Easement to the Boundary Stream area.
WHEN: Monday 13th July to approx. Friday 7th August. Weekdays only.
Warning signage will be placed at all normal entry points. Please avoid the area during this period.
Notice of wallaby control: Mackenzie Basin - Forks River, Cass River and Godley Rivers on private land and the Godley Peaks Conservation Area
WHAT: Contractors will be searching for wallaby or the presence of wallaby with dog and rifle teams during the day.
WHERE: Forks, Cass and true right Godley Rivers including the Godley Peaks Conservation Area in the Mackenzie Basin on the western side of Lake Tekapo.
WHEN: Monday 6 July – approx. Friday 4 September 2026. Weekdays only.
Warning signage will be installed at all normal points of entry. Please avoid this area during this period.
Amendments to Canterbury Regional Council's freshwater plans
Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury) gives notice that, in accordance with s55(2) of the Resource Management Act 1991, the following regional plans have been amended to incorporate changes to policy 3.22 from the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management 2020 (NPS-FM 2020):
- Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan (CLWRP)
- Hurunui Waiau River Regional Plan (HWRRP)
- Waimakariri River Regional Plan (WRRP)
- Waipara Catchment Environmental Flow and Water Allocation Regional Plan (WCEP)
- Waitaki Catchment Water Allocation Regional Plan (WCWARP)
On 18 December 2025, a change to the NPS-FM 2020 was gazetted, and came into force on 15 January 2026. This change concerns NPS-FM 2020 Policy 3.22(1)(d)(iii) and 3.22(1)(e)(iii), which relate to natural inland wetlands, and an exception to their protection when necessary for the purpose of the extraction of minerals and ancillary activities.
The change to Policy 3.22(1)(d)(iii) is as follows, with inserted text underlined:

There is a functional need or operational need for the activity to be done in that location;
The changes must be incorporated into relevant plans, without using the process set out in Schedule 1 of the Resource Management Act (1991). Accordingly, Environment Canterbury has amended the relevant regional plans.
