Stay safe while exploring southern lakes this summer

The southern lakes of Mackenzie Country are among Waitaha Canterbury’s most popular summer destinations for boating, camping, and recreation. With the community, boaties, and energy companies all sharing these waters - it’s up to all of us to keep safety front of mind.

Extra care needed near dams and power stations

Our lakes are stunning places to unwind but they’re also home to dams and power stations that create hidden hazards.

Recent rainfall and snowmelt have pushed water levels high, and Meridian Energy has confirmed controlled water releases from Lakes Benmore, Aviemore and Waitaki until inflows reduce from Thursday 11 December 2025Read the full warning on Meridians website

These conditions can also affect rivers across Canterbury. Read our summer safety alert on rising river levels and unpredictable weather.

Risks on the water

Water releases from dams can cause rapid rises in water levels and strong, unpredictable flows downstream. Conditions may change quickly, even in calm weather.

If you’re camping, swimming, boating or relaxing near Benmore, Aviemore or Waitaki, stay well back from the water’s edge at all times and follow all warning signs and instructions.

Dam intakes can create strong currents and whirlpools, and when spillways open, huge volumes of water rush downstream. These powerful currents increase the risk of boats capsizing or sinking.

“The consequences of getting too close to dam structures or spill zones can be catastrophic,” said Gordon McKay, Deputy Harbourmaster – Recreational Boating and Operations.

“These areas are extremely dangerous, and conditions can change without warning. That’s why we’re reminding everyone: enjoy your summer on the water but stay well clear of dam structures and spill zones”.

Top safety tips

  • Check signage at boat ramps before launching
  • Respect buoys and navigation markers - they’re there for your safety
  • Stay at least 200 metres away from power station structures
  • Take extra care in downstream areas where flows can change suddenly

What we’re doing to keep you safe

To help keep everyone safe, we’re:

  • Installing extra signage at Benmore Dam warning of spill zone dangers
  • Replacing and adding buoys near Aviemore and Waitaki dams to reinforce the 200 metre safety zone
  • Sharing regular updates on our Facebook page and read the hazards and navigation safety events.

Guardians of Canterbury’s waterways

Canterbury Regional Councillor Peter Scott said as guardians of Canterbury’s waterways, the Council takes the safety of our southern lakes extremely seriously.

“These lakes are shared by communities, visitors, and energy operators, and with rapidly changing conditions around dam structures, the risks are real. Strengthening safety measures at Benmore, Aviemore, and Waitaki is not just operational, it’s part of our governance responsibility to protect people and ensure the safe use of these high-value public assets. We’re asking everyone to stay alert, respect hazard markers, and keep their distance so we can all enjoy the lakes safely this summer.”
