- Biodiversity (biological diversity)
- The variability among living organisms, and the ecological complexes of which they are a part, including diversity within species, between species, and of ecosystems. This definition links species with ecosystems by recognising the ecological habitats and functions generated by the interactions of species with their environment.

- A collective of one or more types of microorganisms that can grow on the surface of substrates. Microorganisms that form biofilms include bacteria, fungi and protists
