Ecosystem
A system of interacting terrestrial or aquatic living organisms within their natural and physical environment. In Section 2 of the Resource Management Act, ecosystems and their constituent parts are part of the environment and include people and communities. In Chapter 9 of the CRPS – Ecosystems and indigenous biodiversity, “ecosystems” are limited to natural ecosystems that do not include people and communities
Ecosystem services
The range of direct and indirect benefits that humans receive from the natural environment
Evapotranspiration
Loss of water from the soil both by evaporation from the soil surface and by transpiration from the leaves of the plants growing on it
