Working with mana whenua

Working with mana whenua is core to the success of the Canterbury Water Managment Strategy and ensures good outcomes for rūnanga. We’re learning new ways of working with Ngāi Tahu and strengthening relationships based on mutual trust and respect. The concept of kaitiakitanga (guardianship and protection) underpins our relationship.

Holistic approach

Water is a valued taonga and ki uta ki tai — ‘from the mountains to the sea’ — is an important Ngāi Tahu ethic. A holistic view of the world and cooperation between agencies, legislation and management is required to achieve sustainable water management.

Learn together

True collaborative engagement never occurs when groups are consulted separately. Bringing everyone together around the table from the beginning is vital. Rūnanga are represented on all zone committees and are an essential part of the collaborative planning process.
